Series: Lies Beneath, #1

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

I was really anticipating LIES BENEATH, so when I got approved on NetGalley for this title, I freaked out. But I have to say, I was a bit disappointed with this book.
The writing style felt a bit choppy for me. Anne Greenwood Brown has her great moments in dialogue in this book, but I felt that something was missing in this book. Maybe it was the lack of action for the first half? Maybe it was our main character suddenly falling in love with Lily? I just can’t put my finger on it.
And that’s the thing: Calder (the main character) almost instantly fell in love with Lily (the love interest). I sometimes love insta-love, but I really wasn’t a fan of this relationship. Calder is a snarky and laid-back guy, while Lily is protective and hides her true feelings. I just didn’t see any chemistry.
But I loved Calder’s sisters. They were even more snarky and sarcastic than he was! Brown made these characters come to life, and I applaud her for that.
Overall, I was disappointed by LIES BENEATH. Maybe book two will be more action packed (even though LIES BENEATH had tons of action in the second half).

    1. Hi Jaret! I took the background photo from a royalty free website (it was so long ago, I can't remember the name), found some stars from Google images, and used a font that I had saved on my computer and created a rating system! Hoped that helped! :D
